Voice Lessons & Tips on Singing : The Motorboat Vocal Exercise

This is Larissa Lam, on behalf of Expert Village,
we’re going to be giving you more singing tips and techniques. This is a great vocal
exercise that I’m going to show you. It’s really about loosening the lips and vocalizing
your vocal cords without straining them. And this is again going to look a little silly,
and maybe as a kid you’ve always done the… thing, so I’m actually going to be encouraging
you to do that, but we’re going to be doing this with a scale. You’ll hear the music,
and I’m just going to be going… to the music. But, it’s really about loosening up the jaw,
the lips, and warming up the vocal cords. Here we go. You can hear the notes going up
the scale… Just follow along… With the lips…Remember to breathe with your diaphragm…
If it’s getting too high for you, don’t worry, just wait until the music comes back down
on at comfortable pace… Breathe with your diaphragm… If you mess
up with your lips, don’t worry just keep going. Pick right back up and keep doing the exercise.

  1. a tip for keeping the bubbling is to place your index fingers on each corner of your mouth but don't push down on the corners. and you're supposed to control the breath so you get through the scale

  2. i warmly recommend aniger320's advise, keeping your index fingers on your cheeks, in order to keep relaxed and focused on your tone and jaw, not on the thought "oh my god, i hope i wont disconnect again from the lip rolls!". she is pushing… and that is awful and tiring for the throat.
ps: it is ok to feel ticklish because you 'resonate' πŸ˜‰ its weird at first, but after a while of practice your body will get used to it and learn how to control it.
tip: try to lower your larynx a bit.

  3. Ok, so you've taught the end product, but you're not teaching how to get it done. We're watching this because we don't know how to do it. So help us out here. Any tips on getting our diaphragm to work?

  4. oh i love that exercise most of all vocal exercises. :)) it's probably one of the silliest ones, don't let anyone hear it without warning them. πŸ˜€

  5. Motorboat? Is she kidding me? If you encounter ANY singing teacher who calls liprolls "motorboat" run the other way and get your money back.

Larissa here might be an attractive woman but in terms of voice instruction she leaves a lot to be desired. She's not even doing these correctly. She is using far too much pressure and never explains HOW to do these. Chalk up yet another "expert" on this channel who is far from actually being one.

  9. @tashahops99 If you sound horrible when recording, it's because you are horrible. I know it sounds cruel, and I'm not putting you down or anything, but it was the same thing with me. I thought it was because my camera doesn't have very good sound quality, but once I kept practicing, I just got better and better. Get a vocal coach if you can. I thought I was a reasonably good singer, but once I got teaching, I was able to do things I only dreamed of. Good luck and God bless hun πŸ™‚

  10. Just a little tip for all the singers on here, don't use use the hh sound when you sing. Like if you sing something like the word away, but you sing haway, don't do that. Once you get better, you MIGHT be able to do stuff like that. But otherwise, it makes it so that your voice doesn't go forward, and it just kinda stays back a bit. #personalexperiance Good luck guys!!! πŸ˜€

  11. @ADorkNamedSteph
It sounds cruel because what your saying is cruel. You are putting her down. She is a good singer. She has been doing it for 20 years so you shouldn't be telling her to get a vocal coach. If you are saying your not trying to be mean than why would you say something mean?

  12. @flowergirl1535 If you had been paying more attention, you would have noticed that I was not talking about the lady in the video, but I was replying to someone's comment πŸ™‚

  13. 1. I saw this vid on the side bar and only read "the Motorboat" and couldn't stop laughing. 2. at 2:15 "Pick right back up and keep doing the DEXERCISE!" (:

  14. i like how he kept zooming in.. (camera man)"oh yea baybe maybe you could give me some of that motorboat oh maybe i can get away with zooming in a lil bit more… lol

  15. I had to keep stopping, because my nose would start to itch..
And I also stopped to giggle a couple of times…
