Crazy for Kayak Fishing

FORREST L. WOOD, DEVELOPER OF THE MODERN BASS BOAT. WHETHER ON A BOAT OR OFF OF A BRIDGE, THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO GO FISHING. BUT ONE OF OUR FAVORITE METHODS HAS GOT TO BE ON A KAYAK. THE HOBIE KAYAKS ARE READY TO HIT THE WATERS OF THE MANOKIN RIVER. DOUG GREINER AND MYSELF ARE HEADING OUT IN SEARCH OF ROCK AND SPECKLED TROUT, AND IT’S LOOKING LIKE A FINE MORNING FOR FISHING. IT’S BEEN REALLY GOOD THERE’S BEEN SOME REALLY GOOD ROCKFISH HERE AND SOME SPECKLED TROUT HAVE BEEN SHOWING UP, SO WE’RE HAVING A REALLY GOOD YEAR FOR THOSE. OTHER THAN ENJOYING THE SCENERY, THE GREAT THING ABOUT KAYAK FISHING IS ITS STEALTH AND LOW MAINTENANCE. LOT OF NOISE REDUCTION FROM THIS YOU DON’T HAVE THAT BIG OUTBOARD MOTOR PROPELLING YOU THROUGH THE WATER SO YOU’RE JUST A LOT MORE QUIET, ABLE TO SNEAK UP ON SOME FISH. IT’S REALLY LOW KEY, LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF STUFF, IT’S NOT TOO BAD IT CAN FIT IN THE BACK OF A PICK UP TRUCK. NO BOAT NO GAS NO MAINTENANCE, JUST A REALLY COOL WAY TO FISH. AND ON A RARE MORNING LIKE THIS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WIND, IT’S ALSO A COOL WAY TO GET OUT ON THE WATER. FISH FIRST SMALL LITTLE ROCKFISH, HOPEFULLY WE CAN DOUBLE HIM IN SIZE. WITH THE SKUNK OFF THE KAYAK, DOUG CONTINUES PEDALING AND CASTING ALONG THE SHORE LINE. FISHING A LITTLE BIGGER, STILL NOT QUITE WHAT WE’RE AFTER, BUT AS LONG AS WE’RE GOING UP IN SIZE. THEY KEEP GETTING BIGGER, EVENTUALLY NEEDING A MEASUREMENT. 19, GOT ANOTHER INCH TO GO. STILL A LITTLE SMALL. BUT STILL FUN TO CATCH, AND THEN DOUG GETS THE OTHER FISH WE’RE AFTER. SPECK FOLLOWING DOUG’S LEAD, I’M ABLE TO PULL A FISH OUT FROM UNDER THE BAIT PILE AS WELL. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW? IT’S ANOTHER SPECK. DOUG EVEN FINDS ANOTHER SPECKLED TROUT, AND EVEN THOUGH LEGAL AT 14 INCHES, DECIDES TO LET HIM GET A LITTLE BIGGER. IT’S SLOWED DOWN A LITTLE, WINDS PICKING UP A LITTLE BIT. I THINK IF WE CAN FIND SOME GRASS BEDS THEN WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND A FEW NICER SPECKLED TROUT. BUT AS IT USUALLY SEEMS TO DO, THE WIND CONTINUES TO PICK UP EVEN MORE, SO WE DECIDE TO PLAY IT SAFE AND STAY WHERE WE’VE BEEN, PICKING UP A SMALL ROCK HERE AND THERE. THAT’S WHEN I AM LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET WHAT DOUG CALLS A CHESAPEAKE BAY SLEIGH RIDE. ANDREW THAT WAS A FUN FISH BAY SLEIGH RIDE. ANDREW THAT WAS A FUN FISH TO CATCH IN THE KAYAK, BUT AFTER THAT WAS A FUN FISH TO CATCH IN THE KAYAK, BUT AFTER THAT ONE THE ACTION WILL DISAPPEAR, AND THE WIND DOESN’T SEEM TO BE LETTING UP. THE WIND’S PROBABLY BLOWING AN EASY 20 MPH, ALTHOUGH THE KAYAKS CAN HANDLE IT IT JUST MAKES FISHING KIND OF MISERABLE NO MATTER WHAT VESSEL YOU’RE IN. WE DID CATCH A FEW FISH, WE WERE CATCHING FISH ALL THE WAY UNTIL WE GOT TO THE RAMP, BUT UNFORTUNATELY NO KEEPERS TODAY, JUST AN INCH SHORT ON A COUPLE OF FISH. BUT THE FACT TH SH WERE CAUGHT,E ONE WE’VE HAD, YOU WON’T HEAR ANY COMPLAINTS FROM US. BECAUSE ONCE YOU CATCH FISH FROM A KAYAK, YOU’LL BE SAYING SO LONG TO THAT BOAT OR BRIDGE YOU NORMALLY FISH FROM. COMING UP NEXT, IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR
