Coast Guard, good Samaritans, and friends searching for missing fisherman

ACCORDING TO HIS FRIENDS.. WHO SAY HE HAD BEEN FISHING WITH HIS WIFE. SARA MATTISON FOLLOWS UP. SARA? SARA: FRIENDS SAY MORIBE IS AN AVID FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE TOLD OFFICIALS THAT HE’S A GOOD SWIMMER. COAST GUARD SAYS THIS IS STILL A SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION. WE LEARNED THAT MORIBE WAS FISHING WITH HIS WIFE ABOUT 24 MILES SOUTH OF OAHU. THE COAST GUARD TELLS US THE BOATER FELL OVERBOARD WHILE REELING IN A FISH. PETTY OFFICER THIRD CLASS MATTHEW WEST: “THE OTHER BOATER ON BOARD HAD SECURED THE ENGINE, AND WHEN SHE WENT TO THE CABIN TO RETRIEVE A LIFE PRESERVER WHEN SHE CAME OUT HE WAS NO LONGER VISIBLE.” WHEN SHE CALLED FOR HELP…THREE GOOD SAMARITAN CREWS NEARBY ALSO RESPONDED ALONG WITH COAST GUARD. WHEN MARINERS LEARNED OF WHAT HAPPENED…MANY PICKED UP THE PHONE AND CALLED OTHERS FOR HELP. JIM HORI/LOCAL FISHERMAN: “I TEXTED A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE THAT I KNOW IN A GROUP TEXT AND I EMAILED OUR WAIALUA BOAT CLUB MORIBE IS LOST AT SEA AND THEY ARE LOOKING FOR HIM.” PETTY OFFICER THIRD CLASS MATTHEW WEST: “AND THERE ARE ALSO NUMEROUS GOOD SAMARITANS ALSO INVOLVED IN THE SEARCH AND THEY’VE BEEN INVOLVED BOTH THE AIR GROUND AND LAND AND WE WANT TO EXPRESS OUR THANKS IN THE SITUATION.” OFFICIALS HAVE SEVERAL UNITS SEARCHING FROM THE AIR AND ON THE WATER SINCE ABOUT NOON SUNDAY. MORIBE IS 39 YEARS OLD AND WAS LAST SEEN WEARING A LONG-SLEEVE GREY SHIRT AND BOOTS. MATTHEW WEST/COAST GUARD: THE WEATHER AT THE SCENE AT THE TIME WAS 28 MPH WINDS AND SEAS UP TO 8 FEET.” MATTHEW WEST/COAST GUARD: THE OCEAN REGARDLESS OF THE SEA STATE IS ALWAYS THERE’S ALWAYS DANGER INVOLVED IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE VESSEL AND THE ACTION HAPPENING.” SARA: THE COAST GUARD IS ASKING BOATERS WHO MAY BE IN THE AREA TO BE CAREFUL NEAR THE SEARCH AREA BECAUSE IT’S STILL AN ACTIVE SCENE WITH MANY VESSELS INVOLVED. BACK TO YOU. JOE:

  1. Either he was taken out there and set up to be killed, or he was pulled over by a fish and eaten by something.
